Halloween 2022
If you came to this post hoping for some insight on how to get a three-year-old to wear his costume, get him to listen to his parents while trick or treating, or how to teach him how to understand the concept of rationing out candy over days… You have sadly come to the wrong place. Baer wore his (lovingly designed and homemade) costume for a little over a block. He ran door to door, screaming at the top of his lungs “CAAAAANYDYYYYY!” loud enough everyone in Shorewood must’ve heard him, and he cried and cried when I only let him eat four bags of M&Ms. Oh, and I let him skip his nap. Clearly, we were playing with fire today. But you know what? It was a great day, nonetheless.
Baer knew he wanted to be a Scary Ghost (or “scawwy ghost”) since this summer. He talked about it constantly and never wavered in his choice of costume. Cool, I thought, how hard can it be to make a ghost costume for a three-year-old? Pretty hard, it turns out. I found a pretty straightforward pattern on Pinterest: beanie, tablecloth, and black cheese cloth. Together, Nate and I measured where Baer’s face was and sketched out the face of the ghost. We then cut the hem of the tablecloth and pinned his arm holes, then glued the top of the tablecloth to the beanie. And it worked… for a while. First, the beanie started slipping, and Baer couldn’t see his feet because the beanie pulled his face holes off kilter. Then he couldn’t run after his cousins and friends like he wanted to. And finally, he tripped over a raised garden bed. Off with the costume.
We cut the costume to his shoulders, thinking it would make a difference. Nope. I personally think it did, but Baer was not having it. He was D O N E with the costume. So rather than getting a cute-but-scary-ghost on their doorsteps, our neighbors got a super jazzy blonde boy wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and gray sweats. At least he remembered to say “Happy Halloweeeeeeeen!” after picking out his candy (side note: kid needs to work on his candy picking skills. He chose Dum Dums and sour straws over 100 Grand bars and Almond Joys!). All in all, we had fun. I didn’t get enough photos of my buddy for my taste, but what can I do. His heart was in the holiday, and that makes my mama heart happy. Happy Halloween!
