Waiting For a Star to Fall

Now you have that amazing song stuck in your head… If you tell me that you haven’t seen “Three Men and a Little Lady,” go right now to your television and find it. Tom Selleck? Ted Danson? And if I haven’t hooked you yet—Steve Guttenberg? Come on!

Anyway! A look at some of my favorite ‘90s movies and their soundtracks is not the purpose of my blog post today. No, I wanted to spend today introducing you to my brand-new tattoo! Yes! I got it done in March when I went back to Scottsdale for spring break (woo-hoo!), but I didn’t say anything about it because… life, and then April was Occupational Therapy Month with the #ABCsofOT. But May is a new month, and I wanted to kick off the month by showing off my new ink and making a big deal about it because this is permanent, and the reason I got it is a big deal to me.

My Nana died in February. She was my last remaining grandparent, and she had been my last remaining grandparent for a long time (prior to her, my Pop (her husband) had died when I was in my early 20s—15 years ago). Well, she had given me a hundred-dollar bill for my birthday in October. I’m one of those people who, if they are gifted a significant amount of money, likes to spend that money on one large, meaningful item—not several smaller things. So, knowing that she was not doing well, I carried this bill around with me for months—I just did not know what to buy with it. Then it came to me: a tattoo. But what kind of tattoo? I wanted it to be representative of all my grandparents. So, I hunted around the Internet and found this design: a shooting star with two smaller stars on each side. I felt like the larger star (which looked like a star I could have quite possibly drawn when I was in middle school!) was me, and the star on one side was my Longwell grandparents, and the star on the other side was my Grice grandparents. I was pushing ahead, and they were behind me, supporting me in all of my endeavors.

As my tattoo artist, Charlie, said (yeah, I think him inking me twice qualifies him as my tattoo artist 😊): this isn’t my first tattoo, but this is my first visible tattoo, so it has the same effect. Turns out, he is absolutely correct! And I love it! I have one more tattoo planned, but that’s not until after I finish my PhD… so stay tuned!
